The Lumbo-Pelvic-Hip Complex

If the foot is our foundation, the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex is the engine room. The hips and low back sit at the center of nearly every major movement we perform. They produce enormous amounts of force, transfer that force between the lower and upper body, and organize the trunk while the limbs move around it. This makes the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex arguably the most important region to understand when it comes to strength training.


It is also one of the easiest areas to misunderstand. The hips, pelvis, and lumbar spine are so closely connected that their movements can easily blur together. A lifter may think they are using their hips when they are actually moving through their low back. The goal is not to eliminate movement from this region, but to understand where the movement should come from.


The Spine Is a Stabilizer


During most heavy compound movements, the lumbar spine needs to provide a stable connection between the hips and the rest of the body. In a squat, deadlift, or heavy carry, the goal is not to repeatedly flex and extend through the low back to move the weight. We want to create a rigid trunk, allow the hips to move, and use the hips to produce force.


This is why teaching someone how to breathe and brace should be one of the first things they learn when they enter a gym. The ability to create trunk stiffness is one of our best protective mechanisms when lifting heavy. Before we ask someone to produce large amounts of force, they should understand how to control the position of their spine while doing it.

The Spine Needs to Be Adaptable


Training the spine has become unnecessarily controversial. The idea that spinal movement under load is inherently dangerous is just as problematic as assuming the spine should be exposed to unlimited movement under load. Spines need to adapt to demands.


A well-trained spine should be capable of both deep, controlled movement and significant stiffness. The key is knowing when each quality is appropriate. During heavy compound lifts, spinal stiffness should generally come first because these are the movements where we are asking the body to produce and transfer the greatest amounts of force. Outside of those demands, the spine should still be trained to move through controlled ranges of motion.


Individual history matters here. Someone with a history of back injury should not necessarily be exposed to the same loading strategy as someone without one. We need to understand what the spine has experienced, what it can currently tolerate, and what we are trying to prepare it for.


The Hips Need to Move


If we want the spine to remain stable, the hips need to be capable of moving. The hip is designed to provide significant range of motion, and when it cannot, the body has to find that movement somewhere else. Often, that movement comes from the lumbar spine.


This is why hip mobility and spinal stability cannot be viewed separately. A lifter who cannot access the hip motion required for a squat or hinge may compensate by moving through the low back. Over thousands of repetitions, especially under load, repeatedly asking the spine to provide movement that should have come from the hip can create unnecessary stress.


One of the best ways to protect the low back is to give the hips more capacity to do their job.


The Hips Are the Engine


The hips are some of the body's most powerful force producers. Squatting, deadlifting, jumping, sprinting, lunging, and Olympic lifting all depend on the hips' ability to produce force. But that force is only useful if the trunk can control and transmit it.


The hips produce the force. The pelvis organizes it. The spine transfers it. When those relationships work together, we have a strong and efficient center from which the rest of the body can move.


The Bigger Picture


The lumbo-pelvic-hip complex is a perfect example of why we cannot look at the body as a collection of isolated parts. The hips need to be mobile enough to move, the pelvis needs to organize the relationship between the hips and trunk, and the spine needs to be capable of both movement and stability.


Great coaching means knowing when to demand movement and when to demand stiffness. We should not be afraid of spinal movement, but we should never be careless with it either. Movement should happen where it should, stability should exist where it needs to, and the entire system should work together.
