Exploring HSA/FSA Reimbursement for Personal Training

At Method Strong, we have always believed that strength training is more than just exercise,  it is an investment in long-term health, resilience, and quality of life. As conversations around preventative healthcare continue to evolve, more people are asking an important question:

Can personal training be reimbursed through HSA or FSA funds?

The answer is: potentially, yes - depending on individual circumstances and medical necessity.

Because of this growing interest, our team is currently exploring pathways that may allow eligible clients to use Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds toward personal training services.

Why This Matters

Strength training has repeatedly been linked to improvements in:

  • Blood sugar management

  • Bone density

  • Cardiovascular health

  • Fall prevention and balance

  • Weight management

  • Joint function and mobility

  • Mental health and stress reduction

For many individuals, structured exercise is not simply recreational, it can be a critical component of managing or reducing risk for chronic health conditions. In some cases, healthcare providers may recommend supervised exercise or strength training as part of a broader wellness or treatment strategy.

How HSA/FSA Reimbursement Typically Works

While fitness memberships and personal training are not automatically covered expenses, reimbursement may be possible when exercise is deemed medically necessary by a licensed healthcare provider.

This often involves documentation such as:

  • A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)

  • A qualifying medical condition or diagnosis

  • Recommendation from a physician or other qualified provider

Conditions that sometimes qualify can include:

  • Obesity

  • Diabetes or prediabetes

  • Osteoporosis

  • Hypertension

  • Chronic pain

  • Certain orthopedic conditions

  • Other medically relevant health concerns

Every HSA/FSA plan is different, and approval ultimately depends on your provider and plan administrator.

What Method Is Currently Exploring

Our team is actively researching:

  • Appropriate documentation requirements

  • Fostering relationships with physicians willing to fill out these necessary forms

  • Best practices for compliant exercise programming

  • Ways to make the process easier for clients and healthcare providers

At this time, we cannot guarantee reimbursement eligibility, but we are optimistic about creating pathways that may help qualifying clients offset the cost of training through pre-tax healthcare dollars.

Our Philosophy

We believe strength training should be viewed as an important part of healthcare, not just fitness. Whether someone’s goal is improving bone density, building strength after physical therapy, reducing fall risk, supporting metabolic health, or simply feeling more capable in everyday life, individualized coaching can play a meaningful role in long-term wellness.

As we learn more, we will continue to keep our community updated. If you have questions about whether training may qualify under your HSA or FSA plan, we encourage you to speak with your healthcare provider, benefits administrator, and the Method Strong management team.
